  1. ok, I wanna go join a gym now! Loved the new show. Loved the twist of the BLACK team. But, c'mon, getting all emotional from letters from home?? How long have they been gone from home? 3, 4 days?

  2. I didn't see the black team part of the show, but my wife DVD'd it.

My concern about the show is two-fold:

    1) The FAST weight loss usually is not a permanent weight loss (thinking about the 31 pounds lost by the older gentleman tonight)

    2) I'm not sure they are teaching a sustainable diet. At the "reunion show" last week, nearly everyone had gained weight from the previous seasons. I don't know how they are teaching those people to eat, but I'd guess it isn't YOAD. Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, get in there!

That said, it is an inspirational show. I wouldn't have been watching it the past two weeks had you not said so much about the show, Rich! I support those people in their efforts to lose weight.

Last week, as my wife and I watched the end of the last season, she turned to me and said, "I can't imagine this, can you?" And then she realized that she could. I would have never qualified for their show, being less than 300 pounds as a guy...but 295 is 295, and 275 (where I started) is 275. So I hope the best for all of them, and it's a darn shame they get voted off. They should be forced to continue to stay at the ranch, but their weight loss no longer counts for their team, and they are out the $100,000 or whatever the prize is for being the biggest loser.

  3. That is the ONE thing I hate about the show is that they vote people off and end their dream of being healthier. They booted Amber last night and she is the one that needed the most help! Of course no one from NBC is going to ask me, but I think they should get rid of the 'voting off' and just give the $250,000 to the person at the end that has the biggest percentage weight loss. I was sad to see Amber go. She so needs support and help.

  4. I also believe that there should not be a voting off. I guess it just makes for more tv drama to do so.

But, it did inspire me to start using the incline in my treadmill and push just a little harder!

  5. I've been looking up some "Biggest Loser" stuff on the net, and I think the my concerns are valid. There were several stories about how former winners of the show have gained back significant amounts of weight. One guy who had lost 125 lbs. regained 90 lbs. In another case, a former participant had lost another fifteen pounds, but she works out between one and four hours a day! I'm a teacher, and could find time to do this in the summer, but during the year? And what about you other working folks with families?

One of the articles suggested (same one with the guy who had gained back 90 lbs) that the issue was the loss of water weight rather than the ultimate burning of fat. I don't know what to make of that, but as I watched the season opener last night on the DVD, I watched the "diet" training very carefully. I know that they don't want to reveal their secrets so you buy their cookbook and diet books...but what they show to people on the show is discouraging. If they are attempting to encourage others to lose weight as a result of inspiration, then tell people how to do it. Kim's diet? "Eat protein, carbohydrates, and fats for breakfast. Same for snack. Same for lunch. Same for snack. Same for dinner..." Don't we all eat those same things anyway?

This is why I love YOAD. If you adopt the lifestyle of eating foods that reduce inflammation, and you do the walking, and you do the muscle training, you will hold your weight in a range, indefinately. It's liveable, it is sustainable, and it is actually enjoyable.

And best yet, you don't need to buy the book (it helps, though, I think), as the whole diet is outlined FREE on the RealAge website with menus, recipes, and everything.

We need to create a YOAD biggest loser program. That should be our goal.

Sorry to vent about this on your blog, Rich, but I like the idea of the show, and I'm frsutrated in the chances of those people to actually keep the weight off AFTER the show.

  6. Vent away!! It's great to hear what everyone thinks. I think most diets have their share of 'failures and backsliders".. You can only show people the way, you can't make them walk down the road. I think The Biggest Loser is very inspirational for anyone who is in need to get healthier and lose weight. I think it will motivate those to find a plan, any plan and begin their own journey.

  7. I was shocked to see that Amber had continued to lose weight after leaving the show. She was definitely the one person that I thought would just give up if she had to leave right away. I'm glad to see that she used being voted off positively and kept working at it.

I agree with everyone about the 31 pounds...that's insane. I'm interested to see how he does this week because I would think he'd gain some back. I'm sure it won't be nearly what he lost, but there's no way I'll believe that he lost 31 pounds in a week and then lost even more the next week.

All in all though, I do find it motivational. I would LOVE to be able to just take a leave from work and family and concentrate on working out and eating right for a few weeks. These people are going through in just a short time all the stuff we're all doing over several months. It's so emotional to lose this much weight...no matter how fast or slow it happens. It is disappointing though to see things like the special and see that most of them put at least some of the weight back on. That is one of the positive things about doing this in the real world, I think. I know what I have to do to keep this off forever because there hasn't been a break from reality while I'm losing (I break from sanity from time to time but not reality...lol)

  8. Very well said. That's what I LOVE about YOAD, it's NOT a diet, per se, it's a change of lifestyle and choices. It's a plan that I can do for the rest of my life. Trying saying that about some of the crazy diets out there!! TBL in it's own way, very inspirational and even though I have concerns about the massive weight loss, I hope they're teaching these people how to maintain their healthy lifestyles after the show is over. But again, they have to do it. We all know that. NO ONE can do it for you.
